MISGA HISTORY 1996-2005

Viewing Tips

It is recommended that you use Adobe Reader 8 for viewing the MISGA History 1996-2005 or any PDF document on the MISGA web site. The Reader is available as a free download from the Adobe web site, http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html . Previous versions seem to lack full functionality, especially regarding "Fast Web View" and "Speculative Downloading in Background." Fast Web View makes the initial pages available as soon as they are downloaded. Then, downloading continues in the background while you are viewing the loaded pages. Using the Bookmark palette, you may request any page of the history, and the background downloading will be suspended long enough to download the requested page. Of course, any page that has already been downloaded will be available instantly.

To insure that the viewing options are optimal, you should open Reader 6 (outside of the browser). Click the Menu toolbar EDIT, then PREFERENCES, then INTERNET. Make sure that the four boxes at the top of the page are checked. They are: (1) Display PDF in browser; (2) Check browser settings when starting Reader; (3) Allow fast web view; and (4) Allow speculative downloading in background.

If you would like to save a copy of the MISGA history to your local disk, your subsequent viewing of the history will be much more efficient. Besides, you will have a permanent copy of the history.

Normally, the document will open in Acrobat Reader within your browser. Use the Bookmark panel on the left for navigation. You can view the history in this manner or you can save it to your disk for off-line viewing. See below.

For the best viewing experience, it is recommended that you:

  1. Download the History document in its entirety to your local drive. Either Left Click the Link to initiate the download, then click the floppy Disk Icon to open the “Save As” dialog box; OR Right Click the Link and choose “Save target as…” to open the “Save As” dialog box.  In either case, when the “Save As" dialog box opens, browse to a location (folder) where you want to save the file, give it a “File name,” and then click “Save.”  The document will download in 15 minutes or less at 56 kilobits/sec or in less than 30 seconds on cable or fiber.

  2. When history document has finished downloading, go off-line if you like.

  3. Open the saved file in Adobe Reader.

  4. When the document opens, the Bookmark palette, or panel, is open at the left of your window; the document view is "fit width" and "continuous."

  5. Click the maximize icon (in the upper right corner, just left of the X) so that your full screen is used for viewing.

  6. Use the Bookmark palette as your preferred navigation technique.

Although one can view the document in Acrobat within the browser, more features and screen space are available when one follows these suggestions.
